Presidents Cup: USA win again

The United States have not lost the Presidents Cup since 1998 and their unbeaten run will continue for at least two more years. Sunday at Quail Hollow, the Davis Love III team clearly dominated the international team of Trevor Immelman by winning 17.5 to 12.5 points.

Despite a rebellion started on Saturday and mainly led by the South Korean players of the challengers, the locals quickly brought back the 15.5 points necessary to secure victory. During the twelve singles on Sunday, the USA may have lost the first match (a big Si Woo Kim over Justin Thomas, 1up), but their opponents never made the miracle of a comeback possible.

The early victories of Jordan Spieth (finally winner of a single in the team event), Patrick Cantlay and Tony Finau quickly extinguished any attempt at international rebellion. A hope that the great success of Sebastian Munoz on the world number one Scottie Scheffler could not revive. After a big mistake on 17 by Canadian Corey Conners (3-putts at 8 meters), Xander Schauffele will finally bring back the decisive point, with a 1up victory.

USA six of their last seven team events. Only the 2018 Ryder Cup escaped them.

It is therefore the eighth success at home for the United States in eight editions of the Presidents Cup on American soil, as well as the twelfth in history for the biennial competition. If the winners have confirmed the power of some of their pairs of doubles for the prospect of the Ryder Cup 2023 (Spieth / Thomas, Schauffele / Cantlay), or discovered in Max Homa a solid teammate under pressure, the Internationals will be able to be satisfied with the performances young players, like Tom Kim (20 years old) or Sung Jae Im (24 years old), who both create atmosphere and perform well on the pitch.

Too bad for them, and for the interest of a one-way event for almost 20 years, not to have been able to field, among others, the Australian Cameron Smith (world number 2) or the Chilean Joaquin Niemann (21st), excluded from the Presidents Cup for joining LIV Golf this summer.
