Mexico will have an important piece in the lineup for the 2023 World Baseball Classic with the arrival of designated hitter and first baseman Rowdy Tellez of the Milwaukee Brewers. This joins José Urquidy as the players who have expressed their interest in wearing the Mexican uniform.
Jon Morosi, a journalist from MLB Network, reported that Tellez, a left-handed hitter, had confirmed his interest in playing with Mexico. Tellez was born in the United States, but his father is Mexican, so he has the option of representing Mexico. in the World Classic. In addition, he could also represent Israel because of the Jewish origin of his mother, but the left-hander chose the Central American nation.
“Rowdy Téllez told me today that he is committed to playing for Mexico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic 2023. His father is of Mexican descent and his late mother was of American Jewish descent, so Tellez qualified to represent Mexico, Israel or his native US,” Morosi reported.
Tellez is in his fifth season in the Major Leagues in which he has been with two teams. In 2018, he debuted with the Toronto Blue Jays in 73 games as a first baseman and designated hitter and averaged .314.
In 2021, he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers where he has established himself as one of the team’s spark plugs and RBI leader. This year he has 30 homers, 107 hits, 81 RBI and a .224 average.
Mexico’s rivals in the World Baseball Classic are Colombia, Canada, the United States and a rival to be confirmed in the qualifying rounds.
