Led by Priscilla Gneto, Joan-Benjamin Gaba and Margaux Pinot, the French judo team won its second European title at the end of a day controlled from start to finish.

After 2022, the Blues are once again at the top of Europe. While the French judokas won six medals, including the title for Audrey Tcheuméo in the -78kg category, the French judo team once again demonstrated the strength of its collective. At the conclusion of the European Championships organized in Zagreb, the Tricolores went for a second continental title by mixed teams. Exempted from the first round, the French started their tournament directly in the quarter-finals against Austria. An introduction that was quickly dispatched. Léa Fontaine, Khamzat Saparbaev, Priscilla Gneto then Joan-Benjamin Gaba all won their fights by ippon with no fight lasting more than three minutes. A success (4-0) which thus opened the doors to the last four for the French team, with Germany vice-European champion in 2023 which was then on its way.

Germany worried the Blues a little

The Mannschaft took the lead with the success of Johannes Frey against Matheo Akiana Mongo but Faiza Mokdar immediately responded by causing the disqualification of Jana Ziegler. The Blues found themselves with their backs against the wall with the victory of Jano Ruebo against Joan-Benjamin Gaba but it remained only an incident. Margaux Pinot tied the two teams on waza-ari against Samira Bock. In the process, Alexis Mathieu twice unbalanced Johann Lenz then Léa Fontaine dominated on ippon Renee Lucht to send the French team to the final (4-2). For the title, the Tricolores had an appointment with Georgia, defending champion. From the start, the Tricolores marked their territory with the victory on disqualification of Faiza Mokdar against Eteri Liparteliani after a Golden Score lasting seven and a half minutes. A success with a taste of revenge for the Tricolor, beaten by the Georgian during the individual event.

The Blues took advantage of Georgian errors

After four minutes of overtime, Joan-Benjamin Gaba made the break on waza-ari at the expense of Lasha Shavdatuashvili. The third point came from Margaux Pinot, who caused the disqualification of Mariam Tchanturia with a third penalty for non-combativity six seconds from the end of the regulation time of the fight. Alexis Mathieu then had the “match point” for the France team against Lasha Bekauri. A balanced fight which saw the Habs receive a penalty for non-combativity after just under three minutes. The situation resolved when the Georgian took a headstand on a missed attack. A dangerous gesture which was punished by an immediate disqualification of Lasha Bekauri, who at the same time offered the title of European champion to the French team (4-0). Enough to launch the Blues towards a bright future during the World Cup and then Paris 2024.
