Milan, 14 May. (Adnkronos) – Over 5 billion and 720 million euros. One billion and 600 million for the realization of the Games and another 4 billion and 120 million for the related works (68% absorbed by 45 road works for a cost that exceeds 2 billion and 816 million euros in total). This is the spending photograph for the XXV Milan Cortina Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2026 taken by a network of 20 national and territorial associations, including Libera, Italian Alpine Club, WWF Italia, Italia Nostra, Legambiente, Mountain Wilderness Italia and Cipra Italia , on the occasion of the presentation in Pieve di Cadore of the report that launches the ‘Open Olympics 2026. We want the Milan Cortina Winter Games to be transparent, legal and accountable’.

Lombardy alone absorbs approximately half of the works (52%) and related costs (47%); Veneto stands out for hosting the 13 works (16% of the total) with an overall higher cost (33% of the total costs); the works that will be held in the territory of the autonomous province of Bolzano alone are numerically higher than that of the entire Veneto (14 in Alto Adige, 13 in Veneto). “The numbers we present – declares the network of associations – do not claim to be a timely and complete account of the works connected to the Games, otherwise the meaning of the request for transparency and knowledge that we address to the decision-maker through the Open Olympics petition would disappear, given that there is no single institutional list that informs us about this.”

Moreover, “it is not up to us, civil society, to provide a list of the works and their cost. Furthermore, many works will be subcontracted, making the work of finding data even more difficult. Our aim in providing this data lies in sounding an alarm: we are talking about an enormous amount of resources and planning, capable of changing the face of the territories as we know it today”.

A concern that was echoed in the interventions during the presentation of the appeal by presidents and representatives of the twenty participating acronyms, including national entities such as Libera, Legambiente, CIPRA Italia, Mountain Wilderness Italia, Italia Nostra, Cai Centrale. These are joined by a plurality of acronyms representing the territorial and local communities: “They are the true protagonists of this request – comments the president of Libera, Don Luigi Ciotti – because this is their home. But the Games belong to everyone and everyone he has the right to know what is happening.”

“Our request cannot remain unanswered because we have both the right to know how the territories hosting the Games are changing and the responsibility to monitor the works. We want to be sure of responsible use of resources, in order to adequately evaluate their impact on our lives and the environment and ensure that none of these resources are wasted in opacity or inefficiency, discouraging any desire for criminal, mafia-type or corruption infiltration, and ensuring that unnecessary expenditure is avoided”, the report continues.

As for transparency, “it is often extremely complex to understand where the data is, being forced to play ‘ping pong’ between different portals and sites. Finally, for too many works we do not know when they will be ready and what use they will have in the future – we read in the appeal – just as it is difficult to understand who are responsible for a work, often even divided into lots, and how the commissioners affect the rules of the game. We almost always do not know the reason for the construction of the works, as they are not admitted to the take part in the public decision, nor can we effectively evaluate its impact,” the appeal continues. Hence the request: “We ask for a concrete commitment: full transparency on the Olympic and Paralympic event and the related works”. All this translates, according to the promoters, into a single portal for the transparency of the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Games, “which enables us to understand, work by work and in open data formats, the steps and the process of the same , expenses relating to the organization and promotion of the Games”.
