As of: 09/19/2022 4:18 p.m

The impasse that has been going on for months about the replacement of the sporting director post at RB Leipzig has come to an end. Preferred candidate Max Eberl will take up his post as Managing Director Sport at the end of the year.

After a long vacancy, the post of sports director at RB Leipzig has been filled. As the Saxons announced on Monday (September 19th, 2022), Max Eberl will join the Bundesliga club and reigning DFB Cup winner as Managing Director Sport from December 15th. Eberl was considered the preferred candidate by RB managing director Oliver Mintzlaff and, according to the club, will receive a long-term contract.

In Leipzig, the ex-professional closes a gap that has existed for more than a year and ends a long search for a successor to Markus Krösche, who left RB in May last year and then went to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Eberl Architect of Gladbach’s upswing

In his more than thirteen years in office (2008 to 2022), Eberl had formed Gladbach into a top team and led the five-time German champions to the Champions League three times. Above all, he made a name for himself as a discoverer of talents, which he bought relatively cheaply and later sold at high prices.

In January of this year, Eberl announced his retirement from active business at a press conference, citing, among other things, great exhaustion. “I no longer have the strength to do this job,” said Eberl at the time. His move to Leipzig had caused a lot of excitement in the past few weeks. The Gladbach fan project sharply attacked the 48-year-old and accused him of having initiated a “drama” at the press conference in January.
