Judo: The Montoise Sophie Berger, wins bronze in Oberwart, in less than 78 kg

Sophie Berger stepped on the podium in the under 78 kg category at the Oberwart European Judo Open on Sunday in Austria.

The 25-year-old Montoise, 60th in the world in her category, was present in a rich array of only seven entries.

In the first round, Berger was beaten by the 31-year-old Turkish Nurcan Yilmaz (IJF 87), a defeat synonymous with being sent to the repechages.

Directly engaged in a fight for bronze, Sophie Berger won on ippon against Montenegrin Jovana Pekovic (IJF 99) in order to clinch a 7th career podium in a European Cup meeting, his first this season.

Saturday, Lois Petit took 5th place in the under 48 kg category, losing the bronze medal fight to Romania’s Alexandra Pop (IJF 95).

The 23-year-old Tournaisian, 64th in the world, had won two European Opens this season in Dubrovnik in April and Sarajevo in May. She again took 5th place in Madrid in June. The European Open in Riccione next week is still on his schedule.
