Most recently, BVB newcomer Niklas Süle (27) was again criticized for his alleged lack of fitness. His weight was also a topic of discussion with moderator Carli Underberg and expert Alfred Draxler in the “Lage der Liga” program.

Draxler clearly: “I don’t think it necessarily speaks of excessive discipline if you come to a new club overweight. The fact that he comes overweight, you can see it really clearly, I don’t think it’s that professional at first.”

His player advisor Volker Struth (56) revealed an interesting detail on the show: Sule’s eating habits were an issue in the negotiations with BVB.

Structure: “When we had our final meeting with those responsible at Borussia Dortmund in January of this year, the question was actually asked, ‘Niklas, people say that you like to eat a hamburger or maybe drink a beer.’ The boy honestly answered yes. ‘Yes, I’ll do it. Just like some other players might do. I get talked about a little more often. And with me you can see the two kilos that I weigh more’.”

But Struth defends the international (40 caps): “You know, at the end of the day it’s important that the player performs. And he’s only been in Dortmund for a few weeks. Now give it a little time. I’m quite sure that Niklas Süle will have a good season at Borussia Dortmund and will also play a good World Cup.”

Süle came to Dortmund from Bayern on a free transfer in the summer. So far, however, the central defender has only played 32 minutes for his new club. Due to a muscle injury, he missed the games against Leverkusen and Freiburg and was only a substitute in the games against Werder, Hertha and Hoffenheim.

BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl (42) on Süle: “I don’t think it’s okay with Niklas that the topic is being opened up again. The topic has been going on for the past few days. We should put a tick under there.”

Kehl himself had not made any secret of the fitness issue recently, he said on ‘Sky’: “I think he can improve on this point.”
