Hemmingen-Westerfeld. It’s a quiet anniversary: Since 1972, the Sportclub (SC) Hemmingen-Westerfeld has been practicing judo in its own division. She won’t celebrate big. The division first has to cope with the consequences of the corona pandemic. “But we can also look back on many successes,” says Bernd-Axel Schimmel, who has been division manager since 2011.

Not only for him Judo is more than an Asian martial art. It’s also a philosophy. “The name says it all, made up of the Japanese words ju = to give in gently, to evade and do = to go, principle,” he explains. Judo is more than just a sport for the whole family and for every body size. “Judo is great, conveys basic knowledge of self-defence, trains motor skills, the sense of balance, increases strength, condition and mobility and leads to strengthening of the entire musculature.” Judo also conveys values such as politeness and helpfulness as well as respect.
50th anniversary: Judo division can record many successes
As a one-on-one sport with physical contact, judo is also interesting because you have to adjust to each opponent anew. The successes show that the Hemminger judoka has always succeeded and continues to do so. For example, Britta Frödrich became Lower Saxony Champion in 1988, Bernd-Axel Schimmel and Vincent Fabian Viebranz Hamburg Champion in 2012 and also Lower Saxony Champion in 2012 and 2013 with their competition kata. In the last ten years, numerous children and young people have also achieved success as regional and district champions in the age groups U11 and U12. The city has also repeatedly honored the SC judoka for their achievements: in 2014 as Team of the Year for adults and in 2017 and 2018 as part of the youth sports awards.

The Lower Saxony Judo Association (NJV) also managed SC Hemmingen-Westerfeld as a certified club in the German Judo Association from 2012 to 2019, because the licensed trainers, who have internationally recognized judo master degrees, also take care of competition training, Popular sports campaigns and belt tests took care of it. “After that, certification was no longer possible because there are no child protection guidelines in the SC,” explains Schimmel.
Corona causes the number of members at SC-Judoparte to tumble
In total, around 17,300 euros have been invested in sports materials and the necessary equipment since 2011 by the judo division from its own allocations and in particular thanks to numerous sponsors. In addition, there are a number of acquisitions for the organizational and event area. The SC as a whole also contributed 7400 euros. Conversely, the judo section is also involved, for example with donations for the artificial turf pitch on the Hohe Bünte and also for the multi-purpose hall of the SC.
There is more on the judo section’s wish list, but Corona has led to a decline in members, so that the first priority is to recruit new members. After the division was about to close in 2011 with only about ten active members at the time, the number of judo athletes increased to around 70 Hemminger by 2020 after the division was taken over by Bernd-Axel Schimmel. “Whether it’s because of the start of studies for young people, the long break in training due to Corona or the cost factor – we currently only have around 30 active members, mainly children,” explains Schimmel.
Committed to his sport: SC Judo manager Bernd-Axel Schimmel is happy about the 50th anniversary of the club division.

The division is hoping for more members, for example, through the judo pilot project “Talent Schools of Sports” in Hemmingen together with the elementary schools in Hemmingen-Westerfeld and Hiddestorf. Schimmel was named talent scout in physical education at both schools by the NJV. Initially a lack of funds and then the corona pandemic that has occurred have so far prevented the division from being able to implement the pilot project.
