Edwin Díaz plans to play Puerto Rico in the 2023 World ClassicSeventh Inning

Sound the trumpets because the star closer Edwin Diazwho has become more famous recently for his distinctive entrance with the Mets, will represent Puerto Rico in the next edition of World Baseball Classic 2023.

Díaz will be the Puerto Rican team’s closer for the second time, after putting on the uniform for the first time in the 2017 edition when Puerto Rico finished second in the competition. On that occasion he struck out nine in 5 1/3 innings.

The announcement comes after Marcus Stroman, the 2017 edition MVP, revealed his decision to play for Puerto Rico instead of with the United States team.

Carlos Correa, José Miranda and Javier Báez are other standout players who will be representing Puerto Rico trying to give the island its first World Baseball Classic title after finishing second in the two most recent editions.

Official rosters will be announced over the winter break.

Puerto Rico will participate in Group D at the loanDepot Park, considered the most competitive group in the entire tournament. They will face the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Israel and a team to be defined in the qualifiers.
