Club icon Dany Verlinden had to leave Cercle Brugge: “And that still hurts a lot”

The Bruges derby is on the program this weekend. Until last season, Dany Verlinden was still working as a goalkeeper coach at the Association. The Club monument still finds his farewell there a painful thing.

“I had a good time there for four years and would do it again straight away. Even though I was not accepted by some supporters at the beginning because of my Club past and that caused some problems,” he says in The newspapaer. “Except one or two people, nobody saw it coming. Just about everyone was shocked. That’s why it hit so hard. A year earlier, after a difficult season in which Didillon didn’t deliver what we expected, I couldn’t have said anything about that. But now?”

He is clear about why he had to leave. “Because Didillon didn’t bring what he can bring. And that is my responsibility. In the meantime he has gone to Monaco, but hey. It’s one man’s decision, I guess. And according to that person, I hadn’t pushed Didillon enough. However, it was his best season. He said so himself. Understand who can understand.”
