Alcaraz unrolls
Carlos Alcaraz did not finish his first match on Tuesday in New York. Sebastien Baez had surrendered at the start of the third set. This time Alcaraz was forced to push to match point. But he didn’t let a round slip away again. The young Spaniard, seeded number 3, won in three sets (6-2, 6-1, 7-5).
Two easy first sets and three small games later, Alcaraz was forced to fight in the third set. But his first match point, obtained at 6-5 and on an aggressive forehand, was the right one. In the next round, he will challenge Jenson Brooksby, who beat Coric.

Coric falls from above
This was not necessarily what the public at the Grandstand expected. But he very much hoped so. And Jenson Brooksby did. In three rounds, the young American won against one of the tournament outsiders, Borna Coric. Haloed by his victory in Cincinnati in the Masters 1000 with, among other things, the scalps of Nadal and Tsitsipas, the seeded number 25 fell from above on Thursday. And on a bone.
Eighth finalist at the US Open last year and eliminated by Novak Djokovic, Brooksby delivered one of the strongest games. Two sets mastered from A to Z, the first and the last, and, between the two, a standoff that the American finally won after a very tight decisive game, since concluded at 12-10 in favor of the young Californian.
For three hours, Brooksby did everything better than Coric who can however regret the 14 wasted break points! Only once, he took the service of his executioner of the day, who was more economical in terms of unforced errors (34 against 67). In the next round, Brooksby will challenge the winner of the match between Coria and Alcaraz.
