18th National Sports Festival for Disabled Students Kicks Off in Korea

The 18th National Sports Festival for Disabled Students, a grand festival for Korea’s disabled sports dreamers, began its four-day competition, starting with the opening ceremony held at the Mokpo Indoor Gymnasium on the 14th.

The opening ceremony was held under the theme of ‘Our dreams bloom in Jeollanam-do, the land of life!’, and key figures including Jeong Jin-wan, President of the Korea Sports Association for the Disabled, Song Yun-seok, Sports Cooperation Officer of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeollanam-do Province, and Superintendent Kim Dae-jung of the Jeollanam-do Office of Education, attended the city and city council. About 2,000 people, including provincial athletes and Jeonnam residents, attended.

A record number of 3,828 people (1,764 athletes, 2,064 executives and officials) participated in the competition, which included 17 sports.

At the opening ceremony, Jeonnam Athletics Kyung Kyeong-in and Kim Ye-jeong represented the athletes, and badminton referee Jae-in Yoo represented the referees, pledging to participate fairly in the competition.

In his opening speech, Jeong Jin-wan, president of the Korea Sports Association for the Disabled, said, “As we have worked hard to prepare for the competition, I hope you will enjoy the joy of challenge and achievement in this competition to the fullest.”

Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok said, “The National Sports Festival for Disabled Students is a grand youth sports festival that breaks down the boundaries between disabilities and non-disabled people and unites everyone through deep friendship and solidarity.” “I look forward to joining forces and soaring powerfully into a better future,” he said.

The winner of the first gold medal of the competition was Kim Bo-min (17) from Chungcheongnam-do.

Kim Bo-min won the track and field women’s discus F35-37 (brain lesion disorder, middle and high school student division) event held at Mokpo Stadium with a throw of 9m 28.

Kim Bo-min, who won the competition for the second time in a row, said, “I’ve been training two or three times a week since school, and it’s really fun to exercise and learn things I don’t know. My goal is to learn hard and be selected as a member of the national team in the future.” He expressed his aspirations.
