Barcelona over Uruguay? Araujo has to defend himself for surgery for the World Cup | World Cup 2022

An operation less than two months before the World Cup? Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo is under fire in Uruguay for that decision. “I love my country,” he defended on Twitter.

Araujo injured himself on Friday during the 1-0 defeat with Uruguay against Iran. After barely 5 minutes, the defender had to go to the sidelines.

After an investigation, his club Barcelona announced that Araujo has suffered a tendon injury in his right thigh. The 23-year-old defender will go under the knife on Wednesday to correct the problem.

Barely two months before the World Cup, Uruguay – in a group with Portugal, Ghana and South Korea – sees a strong holder drop out if possible. Many wonder whether surgery is necessary.

“I love my country and I love the national team,” Araujo defended the choice on Twitter. “After consulting with several doctors, we decided that surgery is the best choice.”

“It’s not about choosing one over the other. It’s about health and getting back to 100 percent as soon as possible.”
