The Scotsman became number 1 in the ATP ranking
It will be one of the biggest attractions of the next Gijón Open ATP. British player Andy Murray joins the field of the first major tennis tournament organized by the city. Currently Murray is ranked number 47 in the ATP ranking, but in 2016 he came to hold first place. Among his greatest milestones are two Wimbledons (2013 and 2016) and a US Open. Feliciano López has already warned that the Gijón Open ATP 250 draw «exceeds all expectations».
A young promise joins the picture
Daniel Mérida will also be in Gijón. The 17-year-old from Madrid was a junior quarterfinalist at Roland Garros. Mérida has broken into the Top-500 of the world ranking this season after winning his second professional title at the ITF $15,000 tournament in Valldoreix, Barcelona.
