Gladbach goalkeeper Sommer sets Bundesliga record

Yann Sommer drives Bayern to despair. The goalkeeper from Borussia Mönchengladbach showed a world-class performance in the draw in Munich. The Swiss set a new Bundesliga record with his many saves.

Er was just everywhere. In the air, on the ground, with his hands, with his feet – Gladbach’s goalkeeper Yann Sommer drove the FC Bayern Munich players to despair. The Swiss was the man of the game in Borussia’s 1-1 draw in Munich. Whatever Bayern tried, they failed because of Sommer. Except for Leroy Sané, who scored to make it 1-1 in the closing stages.

Bayern were overwhelmingly superior for 90 minutes and created chance after chance. Overall, Julian Nagelsmann’s players fired 32 shots on goal. Sommer repelled 19 shots on goal, more than any goalkeeper since data collection began in the Bundesliga.

“Yann held up outstandingly, that was world class,” said Gladbach’s manager Roland Virkus. Sommer repelled 19 of 20 shots on his goal, a gigantic value. Just like Bayern’s 35 shots on goal, only once since 1992 have Munich made more attempts (37).

“He held up exceptionally well today. Good man, the Yann. We were lucky in that regard today. We threw ourselves into everything and defended deeply with passion,” said Gladbach midfielder Christoph Kramer.

“The best man on the pitch”

The passion and the outstanding summer were enough to teach Bayern the first point losses of the season. “It was a really tough game. It was clear that there would be a lot of pressure. I’m happy that I was able to do my job. I’ve been here eight years. It’s a lot of fun here, it’s a family-run club that I’ve been with for eight years,” said Sommer.

The Munich team also recognized the world-class performance of the 33-year-old. “We played a really good game. But we’re used to Sommer playing good games against us. Unfortunately, you have to accept that he was the best man on the pitch today,” said Joshua Kimmich.
