the largest Native American culture festival in France is coming to Strasbourg

It’s the beginning of August, the Julyists are returning from their holidays while the Augustians are leaving for theirs. Between the two, many Strasbourg residents must stay in the city this summer. And if we’ve already concocted 10 plans for you to punctuate your month of August, here’s another one, which will delight fans of country and tipis: the Pow Wow Festival returns this weekend, after two years under covid. All this just 40 minutes from Strasbourg.

In normal times, every year, the town of Steinbourg is transformed for a weekend into a land of welcome for Amerindian culture. Supported by the Plain’s Indians Movement association in Alsace, the festival brings together nearly 7,000 people on the Steinbourg lake, in an Amerindian village in which follow one another traditional dances, equestrian shows and concerts. If the pandemic had canceled the two previous editions, the Pow Wow Festival is now making its return on the weekend of August 5, 6 and 7.

300 exhibitors, teepees and country concerts in an authentic village

This weekend, curious Strasbourgeoises and Strasbourgeois will be able to visit the Amerindian village erected for the occasion. A village that wishes to honor the heritage of the First Nations, with nearly 300 exhibitors and 200 volunteers who participate in lifting the veil on the traditions, rites and customs of the different communities. The highlight of the show? Teepees, handcrafted, furnished with various objects and utensils of everyday life. The floors and bedding are covered with real animal skins and there is even a fire placed in the center of the tipi for late evenings. Finally, you can also discover the trappers camp, with nearly 40 American tents, for a return to the Far West. Moreover, if you wish to stay more than one day of festoche, you have the possibility of camping on site.

In this journey through time, you can also attend various shows and concerts. Including horse shows, with archery, dressage, as well as tournaments, chariot races, aerobatics and circus exercises. From 10 p.m. on Saturday evening, you can also enjoy a night show. As for concerts, country fans will be delighted: Texas Sidestep (an Alsatian band), BackWest, Nighthawk, The Hillbilly Rockers Band and Aziliz Manrow will set the festival mood. There will also be groups such as No Age, a rock and blues cover band from Haguenau, and Raza Inka, which performs Andean ancestral music, melodies from the Indian Kechwa community. Finally, of course, there will be something to drink and eat non-stop during the three days of the festival.

The return of the Pow Wow Festival is great news. Just 40 minutes from Strasbourg, the festival offers something very different. Moments out of time, a return to the past towards a culture that we don’t necessarily know, in a slightly crazy atmosphere. So of course, we can’t wait to be there.
