“our press release is legally correct”, Alpine defends itself after Oscar Piastri’s denial

The young Australian driver denied signing with Alpine, a few hours after the official announcement of his arrival by the French team. A twist that surprises Alpine.

Alpine announced Tuesday afternoon that Oscar Piastri will race for the French team ‘in line with the team’s commitments to the young Aussie’.

But the 21-year-old driver then tweeted that he had no “not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023“and that he would not fly”for them next year. He claimed that this announcement was “false” and published “without his consent”.

Later in the evening on Tuesday, an Alpine spokesperson, contacted by the sports department of the BBC responded to this curious denial from the Australian: “We believe our press release is legally correct, but we have nothing more to say.”

The dispute comes after two incredible days for the team. Alpine believed they were close to an agreement with two-time world champion Fernando Alonso for a contract extension. But on Monday morning, Aston Martin announced that they had signed the Spaniard on a “multi-year contract”.
