Official: RB Leipzig announces Werner’s return! | Sports

Now the mega transfer is officially over! Timo Werner (26) is back at RB Leipzig. After two years with Chelsea London and coach Thomas Tuchel, the international signed a contract until 2026.

“I’m very happy to be playing for RB Leipzig again from now on. It was a great time from 2016 to 2020 in which we caused a sensation as a league newcomer. It was a worthy farewell for me back then, going as a record goalscorer. But that’s also a bit of the past and now I’m looking ahead, because RB Leipzig has developed over the past two years, just like I have,” explains Werner, who scored 95 goals in 159 games in his first RB time.

And adds: “I had two great years at Chelsea, for which I am very grateful and which were crowned with the Champions League title. The experience of playing in another country and another league helped me a lot on my way. Now I’m looking forward to the new season with RB Leipzig and, above all, to the Leipzig fans, who are very important to me. We have big plans together and of course I want to be the first Leipzig bull to break the 100-goal mark.”

Werner back!

The national player once went to the “Blues” for 53 million euros (23 goals in 89 games), he is now coming back to RB for the base fee of around 20 million euros.

Florian Scholz, Commercial Director Sport: “Timo Werner’s signing is a special transfer for us. Timo’s commitment made total sense for us – in addition to the sporting component – also due to the financial framework and the agreed contract period. Now we want to build on our successful time together and achieve RB Leipzig’s goals with his help. Above all, that is qualifying for the Champions League, but of course we also want to get as far as possible in the cup competitions.”

After his arrival on Monday with a private jet from “The Flying Bulls”, the private flight fleet of Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz (78), at Leipzig Airport, he went to the medical check before signing the contract on Tuesday.

Christopher Vivell, Technical Director: “Timo Werner is a fantastic striker who brings additional elements to our offensive with his facilities. His speed and finishing skills are outstanding, will take our attacking game to a new level and, above all, make us even more unpredictable. Timo is a German national player, has gained a lot of experience internationally and knows RB Leipzig very well – so he will also play a role as a leading player for us. We now have excellent variability and breadth in attack and an enormous power density in these positions.”

National coach Hansi Flick is also happy about the change: “I am very happy for the Bundesliga that Timo Werner is returning. With his qualities, he is an enrichment for every league. With Leipzig, where he once matured into a top international striker, Timo will continue to measure himself against the best players in the Champions League.”

On Wednesday, Werner, who gets his old shirt number 11 back, will be out on the pitch with his teammates for the first time – albeit without fans. RB is training secretly until the game on Saturday (3.30 p.m.) against Cologne.

Sure: The returnee will be in the squad. Even before that, he goes looking for an apartment. He is currently staying at the five-star Hotel Steigenberger in the city center with his girlfriend Paula.
