Japan dominates the Junior Judo World Cup in Ecuador

The event, which began on August 10, took place in the port city of Guayaquil and brought together nearly 400 athletes from more than 65 countries.

In the event, the Japanese team won six gold medals, well separated from those who followed in the table: France, Turkey, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, Moldova, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, with a world title each.

The tournament takes place at the Voltaire Paladines Polo Coliseum, next to the Alberto Spencer stadium and next to the headquarters of the Ecuadorian Olympic Committee.

The Ecuadorian delegation was represented by 28 competitors in both categories (female and male).

The Tricolor team included the vice champion of the South American Youth Games Laura Vásquez 2022 (-48 kilograms), Erika Jara, first place in the 48 kilos at this year’s national championship and Blanca Chalá, South American champion in 2021.

For the men there was Luis Pacheco (-60 kilos), champion in the South American Youth Rosario 2022 and Ian Mendoza, who dominated the national ranking in 2021.

This is the sixth world championship to be held in Ecuador and among its outstanding performances was the young woman who competes for Spain, Ai Tsunoda, who was proclaimed world champion for the third time and the second in the junior category.

The competition awards points for ranking towards qualifying for the next Olympic Games.

“Very high level. You can see the training and preparation that the athletes from Japan, Italy, Spain, Georgia have had, who have shown a very high level and surely many will be at the Olympic Games in Paris”, assured the president of the Ecuadorian Judo Federation, Roberto Ibanez.
