GTC 2022 | Police investigate the disappearance of two Sri Lankan athletes in the Games Village

Three members of the visiting party went missing from their respective communities, prompting the Sri Lankan delegation to the Commonwealth Games to request passports from their athletes and officials. Sri Lanka, which is going through a serious economic crisis, selected a group of 161 members for the Games.

The athletes’ participation was financially supported by Sri Lanka Cricket and the Commonwealth Games Federation. A judoka, a wrestler and the judo manager have all gone missing, according to the Sri Lankan team’s press attaché Gobinath Sivarajah.

“We have asked all athletes and officials to present their passports to officials at our respective venues in all towns after the incident. Police are investigating and the three are not allowed to cross UK borders. What has happened is really unfortunate,” Sivarjah said.

Three men and two women make up the Sri Lanka judo team. The missing judoka is reportedly a woman. Wrestling and judo competitions are held at the Coventry Arena, which is just 30 minutes from Birmingham.

Sri Lankan athletes had a hard time ahead of the CWG as the nation is struggling with a severe fiscal crisis on top of severe food and fuel shortages.

In the last three months, the players of the basketball team have had to travel almost 20 kilometers to reach their training facilities.
