Former world number one Carlos Moyá defends the ‘essence’ of tennis

While Rafael Nadal prepares his participation in the Cincinnati Masters 1,000, his main coach visits the Halkidiki peninsula in Greece, one of the three “gyms” that the Spanish tennis player has promoted to export his sports methodology to the whole world.

Carlos Moyawho like his pupil was also number one in the world, shares with euronews his reflections on Nadal’s motivation to continue adding titles to his record.

“I am very proud to be part of this team that tries to motivate him and tries to make him better than he is. He is a human being, he is not a machine. Sometimes you have to be his brother, sometimes his friend, and sometimes you have to be to be hard on him, put pressure on him to give 100%”Moya says.

Carlos Moyá also reflects on the change in the regulations of the professional circuit that allows coaches to give instructions to tennis players from the stands.

A change that in his opinion distorts the essence of this sport.

Tennis is a unique sport for that. You are alone, with yourself, against someone else, and it’s like a war. In my opinion, the role of the coach is to prepare the tennis player for anything that may happen. Once the match, he is the one who has to interpret what is happening. That is the essence of tennis, being there alone. The rest of the sports have coaches, teams, orders, all that. Tennis, I would keep it that way, unique. Not now It’s going to be unique, it’s going to be like any other sport, and I don’t like that.”Add.

The fact that there is more “gyms” in the world, could it facilitate the appearance of other tennis players like Nadal? Or like Moyá?

“It will be difficult for there to be others like Nadal, it happens once in a lifetime. Perhaps more like Moyá… it is also difficult but easier than others like Nadal. Although, of course, this type of facility, in a wonderful place like this Sani resort with a Rafa Nadal Academy, it’s fantastic. I’ve been with a lot of guys today and seen the atmosphere. I think it’s great for them, for tennis, and the more we have, the more chance there will be more professional tennis players”he concludes.

Outside of Spain, the “academia” It has facilities in Greece, Mexico and Hong-Kong.
