The rule that gets Novak Djokovic into the ATP Finals

“I understand that winning a Grand Slam qualifies you for the Finals unless you are outside the top 20. My people told me that”advanced Novak Djokovic in the press conference after his victory in the Wimbledon final, against Nick Kyrgios. And he was right.

Although the Serb is not among the top eight in the race for the Masters tournament (November 13-20 in Turin), right now he is 10th, a norm from the ATP rulebook would put himas long as it occupies a position between 8 and 20 in the classification.

Specifically, it appears in chapter 4.01 which refers to the Nitto ATP Finals singles tournament: “Up to two Grand Slam winners of that year, in order of their positions, placed between eight and 20 in the ATP Rankings on the Monday after the last ATP tournament on the calendar”. So Djokovic, unless he suffers a major ranking setback, will play the Finals, a tournament he hasn’t won since 2015.
