Tatjana Maria threw the next seeded player out of the tournament in Wimbledon and surprisingly made it into the quarter-finals. The 34-year-old German prevailed against Latvian Jelena Ostapenko (WTA 17) 5: 7, 7: 5, 7: 5.
After losing the starting set, Maria is already 1:4 behind in the second round. After she brilliantly fended off two match balls at a score of 4:5, the game tilted in her direction. After 2:07 hours, number 103 in the world rankings wins the game.
Maria had reached the round of 16 at one of the four Grand Slam tournaments for the first time in her career – and that just 15 months after the birth of her second daughter. She gets around 360,000 francs for reaching the quarterfinals, but no points for the WTA ranking, which will not be awarded after the dispute over the exclusion of Russian and Belarusian players this year.
German Quarterfinals
In the quarterfinals there will be a German duel. Maria meets compatriot Jule Niemeier. The 22-year-old beat Brit Heather Watson (WTA 97) 6-2, 6-4 in the round of 16 on her Wimbledon debut.
For Niemeier, it is only the second Grand Slam tournament of her career, she only made it into the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time in May. (AFP/bir)
