NFL: Broncos get Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson

The Broncos have made a big splash in the trade market.

According to Adam Schefter theESPNthe Broncos completed a trade with the Seattle Seahawks for the services of quarterback Russell Wilson.

The Broncos send quarterback Drew Lock to Seattle, along with defensive lineman Shelby Harris and several draft picks.

Rumors had been swirling for some time that the Broncos were looking for a franchise quarterback, something they’ve been hoping for since the departure of Peyton Manning.

Broncos general manager George Paton says Aaron Rodgers’ decision to stay with the Packers on Monday had no impact on their decision to hire Wilson. Talks with Seattle reportedly began at least two weeks ago, and in the final days it was becoming clear that Wilson was plan A in Denver.

The Broncos would not have discussed a trade to acquire Rodgers during the offseason despite numerous rumors.

A week ago, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said the organization has no plans to trade its star quarterback after a disappointing 7-10 season.

Wilson played for the Seahawks for 10 seasons and led the team to a Super Bowl title. He was named nine times to the Pro Bowl.

Wilson’s trade wasn’t the Seahawks’ only impactful move as the organization decided to release linebacker Bobby Wagner tonight, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The team’s two star players in recent years were drafted in 2012. The move frees up $16.6 million for the Seahawks on their payroll.

Wagner has distinguished himself over the years as a general in defense. The 31-year-old Wagner had 1,298 total tackles, 23.5 sacks and 11 interceptions in 10 seasons with Seattle.
