Liverpool got off to a good start in the new English season by beating arch-rivals Manchester City (3-1) in the traditional Community Shield on Saturday with a goal from star rookie Darwin Nunez that eclipsed clumsy Erling Haaland . The Reds, who trailed the Citizens by a point in the league last season, opened the scoring through Trent Alexander-Arnold after 21 minutes, before Julian Alvarez equalized 20 minutes from time. But a penalty from Mohamed Salah (2-1, 83rd) and a diving header from Nunez (3-1, 90+3) gave them the last word.
