Judo RD wins five medals in Guadalupe 2022

GUADALUPE.- The Dominican judo team, which competes in the I Caribbean Games, won five medals in the tournament that took place at the Haul Paul Chonchon complex in Guadeloupe.

Clara Barinas won the gold medal, in the -57 kilos, while Creymarlin Valdez obtained silver, in the -70 kilos.

Antoni Matos (-73 kilos), Derick Burgos (-90 kilos) and Franklyn Guzmán (+90 kilos) won a bronze each.

Barinas beat the representative of Haiti, Marie Jean, who took the silver, and the bronze was shared by the Cuban Elidiany Martínez and the Puerto Rican Saicha Serrano.

Clara agreed to the medal fight, after giving an ippon in the first round to Martínez and in her quest to reach the final, she submitted another ippon to the local Elorie Jean-Lois.

In the final of the -70 kilos, Valdez fell by ippon against the Cuban Idelannis Gómez. In the previous round, the Dominican defeated the Puerto Rican Stephanie Melendez.

Matos, in the -73 kilos, agreed to the playoff after biting the dust in the first round against the gold winner, Cuban Kimy Bravo.

In the playoff, Antoni took Barbadian Malachi Desir with an ippon.

Burgos ranked third in the -90 kilos category, after defeating Derik Rodríguez, from Puerto Rico, in his first fight. In the next round he was defeated by the representative of Cuba, Sergueis Rodríguez, who won the gold in the final.

In the playoff, Burgos defeated Haitian Bentz Jean.

Guzmán came out on top in the playoffs after defeating Samuel Sanon, from French Guiana. In his first confrontation, the Dominican succumbed to Guadeloupean Mathieu Lalbisson.
