He’s a special guy Fred Kerley. The Texan sprinter, a tall, gangly man with a peculiar running technique, did not want to leave any doubt about his candidacy for the 100-meter gold and starred in a spectacular gallop already in the first qualifying round.
When the favorites usually limit themselves to loosening muscles, looking sideways at their rivals and conserving energy, Kerley impressed everyone and stopped the clock in 9.79.
Nothing like it was ever seen. Not even in Usain Bolt’s best years (2008 and 2009) had such a time been recorded before the semifinals.
