How does Damian Lillard’s contract fit with his extension with the Trail Blazers?

In the NBA, there are fewer and fewer stars who remain throughout their careers in a single team, with Damian Lillard being one of the great exceptions today. The veteran point guard signed a new contract extension with the Portland Trail Blazers, the team with which he debuted in 2012 and with which he will remain for at least four more years.

Prior to his renewal, Lillard already had a contract signed until the 2024-25 season, which includes around $136.8 million, which was signed in 2021. His new extension is until the 2026-27 season, which will potentially mean $121.7 million. and he also has a player option for the final season, leaving open the possibility of being a free agent.

In this order of ideas for the last campaign of the contract, he would receive a record salary of approximately $63.2 million, something unprecedented in NBA history to date, surpassing Nikola Jokic, who had claimed to be the first player to overcome the barrier of the $60 million in his most recent deal with the Denver Nuggets.

Of course, Lillard’s loyalty will have to go hand in hand with the decisions made by the Trail Blazers, who need to surround him in a better way so that their star point guard is happy and doesn’t regret his decision.
