Candelario homers and Tigres beat Athletics 7-2 | Sports

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Sean Murphy hit a three-run homer in a five-run sixth inning that broke a scoreless tie and the Oakland Athletics beat the Oakland Athletics 5-0 on Thursday. Detroit Tigers, in the second game of a doubleheader.

With the result, both teams shared the victories of their two confrontations and the shutout was the sixth for the Athletics in the campaign.

In the first duel, Jeimer Candelario hit a home run and Robbie Grossman hit two doubles and drove in three runs against his former team and the Tigers beat the Athletics 7-2.

Murphi hit his 10th homer off rookie Garrett Hill (1-2), who was making his third major league start. With his home run, Murphy gets at least 10 home runs for the second consecutive season.

Stephen Vogt had a sacrifice fly and Tony Kemp had an RBI single in the fifth for the A’s, who started an eight-game stretch at home early in the second half.

Frankie Montas started Game 2 after missing two games due to inflammation in his work shoulder.

He pitched three innings and Domingo Acevedo (2-2) pitched the sixth inning for the win.

Acevedo was the third of six Oakland pitchers to notch a four-hit gem in a game that lasted 2 hours, 45 minutes.

Montas had to leave the mound in his previous performance on July 3 during the visit to Seattle and was not expected to play a long day in the game.

In Game 1, Candelario homered leadoff in support of Tarik Skubal (7-8), who struck out nine and didn’t allow an unearned run over six impressive innings in his return to the East Bay.

The pitcher returned to winning ways thanks to his speedy slider after losing five consecutive starts from June 12 to July 3.

“The slider is my best pitch and it didn’t go well, it didn’t do what I wanted it to do,” Skubal said. “I managed to get the desired effect back and I think that’s why my results have been a little different than before.”
