ER is Germany’s footballer of the year

Surprise in the election for Germany’s footballer of the year!

Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku (24) won the election by a hair’s breadth in front of ex-Bayern star Robert Lewandowski (33). Third was Frankfurt keeper Kevin Trapp (32).

In the election organized by “Kicker” among the members of the Association of German Sports Journalists, the French international Nkunku got 134 votes. Lewandowski was hot on the Leipziger’s heels with 128 votes, but in the end it wasn’t enough for the third title in a row!

Nkunku: “I feel very honored and appreciate it very much to receive such a significant award. First and foremost, I have to thank my team, the coaching team and all the employees. A season like this would not have been possible without their support. But now I’m looking ahead and looking forward to the new season.”

The offensive man has had an amazing season with RB. In 52 competitive games, Nkunku scored 35 goals himself and also contributed 20 assists. He crowned his gala season with a goal in the DFB Cup final and the title.

Nkunku (market value €80m) came in 2019 for €13m. by PSG. In the summer there was always speculation about a return to Paris, but Leipzig insists on the attacker’s contract, which runs until 2026.

Schüller and Streich also honored

Bayern striker Lea Schüller (24) cleared the women’s field! And that while she is in London with the national team for the European Championship final on Sunday evening (6 p.m., ARD, DAZN and BILD live ticker).

Schüller, who became Bundesliga top scorer with 16 goals: “I didn’t expect it at all. This is a total surprise! It’s outstanding! That is a super great award.”

Trainer of the year was Christian Streich (57) for the first time! The coach, who has been in charge at SC Freiburg since the end of 2011, had the best season in the club’s history with the club. Sixth in the league – and in the cup final for the first time!

Streich: “My first thought: I’ll get an award now – and everyone who works with me won’t be named. I am aware of my many deficits as an employee and colleague. The fact that only I am named is certainly not fair. I therefore accept the award on behalf of everyone in the club.”
