You never forget a first impression. In 2013, Zenit Saint Petersburg and Atlético meet in the Champions League. Diego Simeone, coach of the Spanish top club, is charmed by one player in particular: Axel Witsel.
There would be two unsuccessful attempts to get the curly-haired head to Madrid.
But look, nine years (and two stops) later, the transfer is a fact. Witsel – transfer-free after Dortmund did not extend his contract – signs a one-season contract with option. The French Marseille also showed strong interest, but reportedly a phone call from admirer Simeone convinced the Red Devil.
Cut-throat competition
For many observers, the “match” is somewhat surprising. Does Axel Witsel fit into Atlético’s macho football?
“It’s a bit like pincers on a pig,” admits La Liga connoisseur Michael Van Vaerenbergh. “Atlético play very aggressively, often over the edge. You have to face all the duels as if your life depended on it. Those are things you don’t immediately associate with Witsel. That is rather a quiet recuperator and controller.”
Van Vaerenbergh therefore doubts whether Witsel will be won as the undisputed title holder. Especially given the cutthroat competition in Madrid’s midfield.
“You have Koke, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Marcos Llorente and also Saúl returning from Chelsea,” he sums up. “The places will be very expensive. With a view to the World Cup in Qatar, it will be important that Witsel gets into the team.”
Simeone has a patent for capturing experienced pawns for free and making them explode.
The commentator suspects that Simeone may have a plan as a luxury substitute in mind with Witsel.
“Atlético like to defend a small lead. Then it can be an asset to bring a ball-resistant rest point like Witsel into the team next to Kondogbia. Especially with his experience and coachability.
