Surprise after the controversy in the list of Spain for the Eugene World Cup. The announcement was made this Friday at the last minute by the Spanish Federation, and comes after a huge controversy aroused around the list of selected by José Peiró, coach of the Federation for the World Cup in Eugene. At first, Fontes, with the minimum required and third in the last Spanish Championship, was left out of the 1,500, where the chosen ones were Mario García Romo, without a minimum, but champion of Spain, plus Mohamed Katir and Adel Mechaal, second and fourth in the National and also with the World Cup minimum in his pocket.
The choice was not easy, but the fact that Adel Mechaal had also planned to run the 5,000 in Eugene and that Fontes had finished ahead of him in the ‘milqui’ of the Nacional made the man from Granada think that he would have a place.
“Injustice”, Fontes published on his social networks when he saw himself outside, in an extensive letter in which he criticized his exclusion from the list and the forms of the Federation, implying that there had been favor treatment towards Mechaal.
Now, just 48 hours later, and after receiving Sources the majority support of Spanish athletes, Mechaal’s withdrawal from Covid opens the door to the World Cup for him.
According to the Federation statement, Mechaal he waives the 1,500, but will remain enrolled in the 5,000 “provided he recovers in time to travel.”
The 1,500 World Cup will begin with the series on Saturday, July 16, that is, the second day of competition. A day later will be the semifinals, while the final will be played on Tuesday, July 19.
Meanwhile, the semifinals of the 5,000 are scheduled for Thursday 21, and the final will be one of the events that closes the championship on Sunday, July 24.
