Why is MotoGP an Audience Crisis?

Data show MotoGP experienced an audience crisis, even at the lowest point in history. Then what caused the MotoGP audience crisis?

Based on data Speedweek, interest in watching MotoGP race live to the circuit is at an all-time low. The comparison of the number of MotoGP spectators has decreased drastically compared to 2019, or before the Covid-19 pandemic, rather than the three 2022 grand prix seasons.

The presence of spectators at the Spanish MotoGP, Italian MotoGP and Catalunya MotoGP proves the audience crisis in the MotoGP event has become a reality.

In total there were only 74,000 spectators present at the Mugello Circuit throughout the Italian MotoGP race weekend. That number fell drastically from the 2019 Italian MotoGP, which managed to bring in 139 thousand spectators.

The downward trend also occurs in the Spanish MotoGP and Catalunya 2022. In 2019 the total number over the weekend at the Spanish GP reached 151 thousand compared to this year’s only 123,000. While in Catalunya 2019 it reached 158,000, while this year it was only 115,000.

So what causes the number of MotoGP spectators to start dropping drastically?

The answer is of course because there is no hero in the 2022 MotoGP racer lineup. If you look at the list of winners in MotoGP this season, only Aleix Espargaro is more than 30 years old. Espargaro was not a racer who had a big name in MotoGP before the 2022 season.

The rest of the winning racers like Fabio Quartararo, Francesco Bagnaia or Enea Bastianini don’t yet have a huge fan base, maybe only in their respective countries.

If you look at the spectators who came directly to the circuit, the yellow and red flags were still dominantly visible in the spectator stands. That means more than 50 percent of the audience knows, likes, and comes directly to MotoGP races because they idolize Valentino Rossi or Marc Marquez.

Rossi has retired after MotoGP 2021, even so the audience who came directly to the MotoGP racing arena this season idolized The Doctor more than racers like Quartararo, Bagnaia or Bastianini.

Conditions are getting worse for Dorna Sports, as the manager of MotoGP, after Marc Marqeuz continues to suffer injuries and has been absent since 2020.

As a result, MotoGP lost two of the biggest magnet racers in the near future: Rossi and Marquez.
