Stefanos Tsitsipas on injections at Rafael Nadal in Roland-Garros: “I’ll tell a story…”

Tobias Laure reports from the ATP tournament in Stuttgart

Rafael Nadal caused quite a stir in Paris.

First with a French Open final in which he didn’t give Casper Ruud the slightest chance at 6: 3, 6: 3, 6: 0.

Then with his statement on the Eurosport microphone: “I played without feeling in my foot and with an injection in the nerve. The foot was then numb,” reported the 14-time Roland Garros champion.

Nadal later specified that he had received injections before every match in the tournament, otherwise participation was unthinkable.

Tsitsipas: “Pain like never before”

For Stefanos Tsitsipas it is difficult to imagine winning a big title with such problems, but he can empathize with how the 36-year-old felt.

Nadal exclusively: “I had no feeling in my foot. That was the only way I could play”

“I’ll tell you a story that, while not directly comparable, is at least a little similar to Rafa’s. I was once in a situation where I was in so much pain that I couldn’t play. That was in 2019 when I won the ATP Finals,” said Tsitsipas.

Before the second group game against Alexander Zverev, he felt “pain like never before” and therefore had to be injected. “I then played a good match, one of the best of my life,” reported the fifth in the world rankings.

Like Nadal, he had the choice of playing with injection or not at all – and like the clay court king, this ultimately led to Tsitsipas celebrating one of the greatest successes of his career.
