Italy Shines at European Para-Archery Championships in Rome: Medal Recap and Highlights

The European Para-Archery Championships concluded in Rome, with the finals in the Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica. Elisabetta Mijno and Daniele Piran confirmed their individual champions in the Olympic and among the Visually Impaired, with eight silver medals and a bronze in the other finals played today. Italy thus finishes in third place in the medal table for Nations behind Turkey (7 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze) and the Czech Republic (3 gold and 1 silver).

THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED RESULTS – Italy celebrates two medals in the Visually Impaired, in category VI 1 Matteo Panariello wins the bronze by beating Andora’s archer Jordi Casellas Albiol 6-0 in the final, an absolute domination for the blue who wins them all the sets 20-7, 23-12 and 16-6.
Daniele Piran is confirmed as European champion among the VI 2/3 at the end of a long and exciting clash against the Spaniard Adrian Orjales Vidal. The blue starts well (21-18) but is caught by the opponent in the second set (24-22), the third set is interlocutory (22-22), while the last two repeat the previous script with 27-21 for Piran and Vidal’s 25-21. Thus we go to the shoot off with both arrows on 7 but that of the reigning champion is closer to the center and is worth the gold.

THE RESULTS OF THE OLIMPICO – A continental encore also for Elisabetta Mijno who wins the European gold again by beating the Polish Milena Olszewska 7-1 in the final. The Italian, first since qualifying, leads throughout the match with 27-24 in the first volley, followed by 27-27 in the second and two other partial wins 27-22 and 27-25.
In the final for the women’s team gold, Italy lost against Turkey. Elisabetta Miijno and Vincenza Petrilli lost in the shoot-off 5-4 (18-17) against Eroglu, Sengul in a match in which the Turks took the lead twice, in the first and third sets (33-30 and 31-29) but are resumed in both cases (35-32 and 32-31). Thus we go to the play-off arrows in which the blues place an 8 and a 9 and their opponents two 9s.
The race of Stefano Travisani and Davide Bettoni also ends with silver as they are defeated 5-1 by Great Britain (Philipps, Radigan) in the men’s team race. The British took the lead 4-0 (37-35 and 37-36) and then closed the match with a draw 35-35.

THE RESULTS OF THE COMPOUND – Defeat and silver for Eleonora Sarti who could do little against the Turkish Oznur Cure who in the whole match only placed arrows on 10 with the exception of an 8 and a 9. A frenetic pace which the Italian kept up only in three volleys, the first, the fourth and the fifth lost 30-29, in the other two the opponent flew towards gold with a 29-18 and a 28-28 which brought the final score to 147-132.
The mixed team’s race also ends with silver with Eleonora Sarti and Matteo Bonacina who are defeated by Turkey (Cure, Korkmaz) 150-155. The Turkish pair took a good lead by winning the first two volleys both 38-36 and then controlled with a 39-38 in the third and 40-40 in the last.
Turkey does not bring luck to the Italian national team who also surrenders in the final for the women’s team gold in which Eleonora Sarti and Maria Andrea Virgilio lose 152-147 against Cure and Yorulmaz. Tough fight in the first two sets with a 38-35 each for the two teams, then the Italians’ opponents accelerate and close with a 39-37 and a 40-37.
The pair formed by Matteo Bonacina and Giampaolo Cancelli also ended with silver, unlucky in the match against Slovakia (Doric, Pavlik). The first set ends in a draw 38-38, then Italy goes up and takes a three-point lead (38-35) but is unable to hold them until the end because the Slovaks with 38-37 and 38- 36 of the last two partials postpone the verdict to the playoff in which they are more precise than the Azzurri with two 10s against a 9 and a 10 which are worth the final 149-149 (20-19).

THE RESULTS OF W1 – It is also silver for the female pair Dalia Dameno and Asia Pellizzari in W1, the two Italians lose against the Czech Republic (Brandtlova-Musilova) 140-129. The Italians prevailed in the first set 35-34, but then lost the next two sets 36-27, 36-33 and ended the quarter on a draw 34-34.
The last final of the day is the one featuring Maurizio Panella and Paolo Tonon against Turkey (Aydin, Hekimoglu) in the men’s W1. Also in this home match Italy surrenders 138-135 in a match in which the Turks win the first three volleys 34-33, 37-31 and 35-34, the 34-32 of the last partial is of no use for the two Italians.
