Roger Angell’s baseball writing was in a league of its own

Writing about Roger Angell is a form of vanity. It’s like commenting on Ted Williams’ batting stance or Tiger Woods’ putt.

Angell, the New Yorker baseball writer, died May 22 at age 101. Her stepfather was EB White, the legendary comedian and author. White married Katharine Sergeant Angell, the fiction editor of The New Yorker, in 1929, when Roger was 9 years old. He couldn’t help but be influenced by the two literary giants in his family, and it was no surprise that he turned to writing. He was a good and gracious man.
