PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi behind Roma boycott of not playing Gamper with Barça

According to the Italian newspaper The Republicin this dispute between big clubs, the president of PSG, Nasser al-Khelaifi, has used his influence as the top leader of the European Club Association (ECA) to boycott the Joan Gamper trophy, which had to face the Barça with Roma on August 6.

According to the Italian newspaper, Al-Khelaifi has pressured Dan Friedkin, owner of Roma, to cancel his commitment to go and play the friendly trophy against Barça. The top manager of the Italian club maintains a good relationship with the Qatari president of PSG and, for a year now, has been part of the ECA’s board of directors, led by Al-Khelaifi. That is why Friedkin has acceded to requests to resign from Gamper and position himself alongside the Qatari leader in his active opposition against clubs that continue to defend the Super League.

At the same time, Barça are still studying whether to take legal action against Roma, who have officially announced that they will not be attending Gamper in order to better prepare for their pre-season. The Catalan club is also moving to get a rival for August 6. Milan, also Italian, is one of the best positioned to face Barça in a match that will serve to introduce the team to the fans.
