French basketball phenom Victor Wembanyama says he is already looking to build on his remarkable debut season after officially receiving his NBA Rookie of the Year trophy on Saturday.
“It’s not enough,” he said. “I want to continue the momentum and let everyone know that they are part of the family and part of history.”
“I was responsible for my team”
Wembanyama emphasized that this coveted NBA award represents the progress he and his San Antonio Spurs teammates have made throughout the season.
The 20-year-old added that the trophy presentation ceremony, which took place at the Scobee Planetarium in San Antonio in the presence of children from his adopted city, perfectly reflected the warm welcome he received at the Texas.
“I think receiving this trophy here, with fans, kids, and everyone happy to be here, it’s also a good feeling for me and a good representation of the love that we have felt throughout of the year,” he explained.
Wembanyama was unanimously chosen as rookie of the year, earning all 99 first-place votes after a season in which he averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists assists, 3.6 blocked shots and 1.2 steals per game, which is a league record.
Throughout this exceptional debut campaign, Wembanyama maintained that he was more focused on the development of the Spurs team than on possible individual accolades.
“I had the responsibility for my team and the challenge of remaining dominant and useful to the team, while remaining healthy,” he recalled. “For me, it was more important than that.”
The rebuilding Spurs finished with a record of 22 wins and 60 losses, but Wembanyama said he was convinced that the emphasis on collective efforts rather than adding stars would allow them to recover in the upcoming seasons.
