  • 1. 18 Bretons selected

  • 18 Breton athletes or those playing in Breton clubs are part of the French delegation which will take part in the 2022 Mediterranean Games in Oran (Algeria) from June 25 to July 5. Cyclists are the most represented with six riders selected, ahead of the four athletes on the list. Six other disciplines also have Breton representatives (badminton, 3×3 basketball, football, bowling, swimming and archery). Léo De Nodrest was part of the table tennis team and had to participate in the singles event. But the Thorigné-Fouillard table tennis player was injured just before the start of the competition and therefore had to forfeit.

  • 2. The Breton program

  • The two representatives of sport-boules and that of badminton will open the competition for the Bretons. Meriem Tahraoui (individual Raffa and ladies’ doublet), Eddy Rouault (individual Raffa and men’s doublet) and Romane Cloteaux-Foucault (women’s singles in badminton) start the competition this Sunday, June 26th. The finals are scheduled for Wednesday June 29 for bowling and Thursday June 30 for badminton. Archer Nicolas Bernardi will enter the competition on June 29 (final scheduled for Friday July 1).

    Football et basket 3×3

    Called up at the last minute with the football team, young Merlu Cheick Doumbia will face Morocco (June 26 at 7 p.m. French time), Spain (June 28 at 7 p.m.) and Algeria (June 30 at 7 p.m.). The final is scheduled for Tuesday, July 5.? Two Bretons will also take part in the 3×3 basketball competition. The new recruit of the LBB, Anna Ngo Ndjock will challenge, in group B, Tunisia (June 30 at 5 p.m.), Egypt (June 30 at 8:40 p.m.) and Italy (July 1 at 7:20 p.m.) while that the men’s team of Rennais Lorenzo Thirouard-Samson is placed in group C with Serbia (July 1 at 7:40 p.m.) and Cyprus (July 1 at 10:20 p.m.). The final phases are scheduled for Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 July.

    Cycling: Thursday June 30 and Saturday July 2

    The cycling events are expected, with six Bretons among the 14 selected. The ladies’ time trial (with Cédrine Kerbaol and Marie Le Net) will take place on Thursday June 30 at 10 a.m. Online races are scheduled for Saturday, July 2 (10 a.m. for men and 5 p.m. for women).

    Athletics: finals on Friday July 1 and Sunday July 3

    In athletics, Shana Grebo will be the first to enter the track, Thursday June 30 (1st round of the women’s 400m hurdles at 5:50 p.m.). The final is scheduled for Friday July 1 at 7:15 p.m. The three other Bretons will compete on Sunday July 3: Solène Gicquel (women’s high jump final at 6 p.m.), Tom Reux (men’s discus throw final at 6:05 p.m. ) and Simon Bédard (men’s 5,000m final at 7:35 p.m.)

    Swimming: Sunday July 3 and Monday July 4

    Mathias Even is involved in two events during these Mediterranean Games. Cercle swimmer Paul Bert Rennes will take part in the men’s 4x100m freestyle on Sunday July 3 (preliminaries at 12:07 p.m. and final at 7:44 p.m.) and in the men’s 50m freestyle the next day (preliminaries at 10:10 a.m. and final at 6:03 p.m.).

  • 3. Second edition in Algeria

  • Initially scheduled for the summer of 2021, the 19th edition of the Mediterranean Games has been postponed to 2022 due to covid-19. They will take place in Oran from June 25 to July 5. This is the second time that Algeria has hosted them, after Algiers in 1975. Only Spain has more organizations of the event (Barcelona in 1955, Almería in 2005 and Tarragona in 2018).
