Montpellier and FC Nantes Battle to a Stalemate: A Result with Mixed Outcomes

A result which does not suit anyone in the race for maintenance. Montpellier Hérault Sport Club hosted FC Nantes for the first meeting of the thirty-first day of Ligue 1. At the end of an exciting meeting, the two teams parted with a score of parity (1-1). At the end of the match, two Montpellier players were excluded: Lucas Mincarelli (90th+1) and Arnaud Nordin (90th+5). In the event of poor performance from Le Havre (against PSG) and Lorient (against Toulouse), the Paillade club could be officially maintained. Conversely, Antoine Kombouaré’s men are only six points ahead of the red zone.

Abline responds to Adams

Montpellier Hérault Sport Club, who started the match perfectly, opened the scoring in the second minute of play. Savanier launched Al-Tamari from the outside of the right. Lucid, the Jordanian sends a perfect ball into the race of Adams, alone at the far post and who deceives Lafont with the flat of the right foot (2nd). A few seconds later, the Paillade club was close to doubling the lead. New high-class gesture from the Montpellier captain, with a “coat rack” control before following up with a 50m right lob attempt. But it goes just above the Nantes goals (4th). In the process, FC Nantes equalized. Omeragic loses the ball and it benefits Mohamed who accelerates, stares at Tchato before throwing an Abline cross pass. Alone against Lecomte, the Nantes striker slips the ball into the opposite net with a pointer with his right foot (1-1, 7th).

Shortly after a quarter of an hour of play, Michel Der Zakarian’s men cruelly lacked realism. Found at the entrance to the area, Nordin gets rid of two opponents before putting himself in a striking position but his powerful right shot flies away (16th). Behind, Tchato sends a good cross deflected towards Adams, alone at the far post. The Nigerian “snatches” the ball from Chotard, turns around and continues with the shot but his shot goes just over (17th). Shortly after the half-hour mark, the Montpellier defender remained in the air for a very long time and won when Savanier’s free kick landed. But his header, deflected in the duel by Pallois, passes right next to Lafont’s right post (33rd).

After an incredible weak time, Antoine Kombouaré’s men will outrageously dominate the last quarter of an hour of the first act with three big chances. A first on an excellent cross from Chirivella, Mohamed is left alone at the penalty spot and can slam a powerful header at the near post. But Lecomte relaxes well and releases the ball with a nice horizontal shot (41st). One second after a nice combination. Found by a deflection from Mohamed, Mollet unleashes a good shot at the edge of the area but Lecomte intervenes. Abline recovers, transplants and hits the near post but Lecomte is there (45+2). A third after a counter flash. Found at the entrance to the area, with his back to goal, by Coco, Mohamed turns around and follows with a shot from the right but it is directly at Lecomte, who catches the ball without difficulty (45+3).

The MHSC reduced to 9, Nantes failed to achieve

As soon as he returned from the locker room, the FC Nantes striker Abline was close to the double. Starting from his camp, Abline overtakes the entire Montpellier defense to present himself in the Lecomte area. He tries the pointy shot again but it misses this time and it clearly misses (48th). Shortly after the hour mark, Antoine Kombouaré’s men once again lacked realism in front of the opposing goal. While he had managed to get past Mincarelli, Mollet completely missed his recovery from an excellent cross from Moutoussamy, hampered by Sagnan’s deflection (67th). Montpellier’s response came twenty minutes from the end of regulation time. Following a ball recovered high by the Montpellier team, Savanier is served full axis at 25m and unleashes a heavy shot by turning around but it goes over. Too bad because Nordin was alone on the right (72nd).

In money time, the winner of the 2022 Coupe de France was close to snatching victory. Following a nice breakthrough from Abline’s left and a hell of a billiard shot, Moutoussamy managed to get past the Montpellier defense but he was unable to adjust his poorly taken recovery, which flew above (80th). The Montpellier Hérault Sport Club, which suffered a lot, was reduced to nine in added time. Mincarelli is sent off for a last defender foul on Traoré (90+1). A few seconds later, Arnaud Nordin was also excluded following a real attack on Cozza. The former Stéphanois’ foot was incredibly high and ended up on the chest then on the head of the left side from Nantes (90+6). Behind, the people of Nantes pushed to take the three points… in vain. Jérémy Stinat, referee of the match, ended the match after nine minutes of added time.
