Midón’s stay in Nottingham concluded

The stay of Corrientes Lautaro Midón (18 years old) in the Nottingham J1 tournament ended yesterday, when he lost his match corresponding to the quarterfinals.

The contest that is played on English grass serves as preparation for Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the year.

Midón, number 14 in the ITF Junior ranking and third seeded in the competition in Nottingham, lost yesterday against Canadian Jaden Weekes (17 years old, 27th) 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.

In his first competition prior to Wimbledon, Midón, being one of the pre-classified, started directly in the second round, where he beat New Zealander Jack Loutit 6-1, 6-3, then, in the round of 16, he accounted for the Australian Edward Winter 7-6 (7-4) and 6-4.

Now Midón plans to play the Roehmapton J1, where he will start as the tenth seed. The tournament, also on a grass surface, will begin on Sunday 26.

Buenos Aires

Argentines Juan Pablo Ficovich, Gonzalo Villanueva and Mariano Navone advanced yesterday to the quarterfinals of the Buenos Aires Tennis Challenger, beating Facundo Juárez from Mendoza, Guido Andreozzi from Buenos Aires and Nick Hardt from the Dominican, respectively.

Juan Pablo Ficovich, ranked 168th in the ATP world ranking and first seeded in the tournament, beat Juárez (341) 6-1, 6-1, after just 1 hour and 12 minutes of play.

Ficovich will face today in the quarterfinals against Mariano Navone, who beat Dominican Nick Hardt (300) 6-1, 4-6, 6-0, after 2 hours and 1 minute of play.

In turn, Gonzalo Villanueva (291) defeated Guido Andreozzi (518) 7-6, 6-2, in 1 hour and 31 minutes.

Villanueva will face in the quarterfinals against the Tunisian veteran Malek Jaziri (324), who yesterday eliminated the Argentine Juan Ignacio Galarza (752) by beating him 7-6 (10-8) and 7-6 (8-6), after 2 hours and 8 minutes of gameplay.

Another Argentine who is still in the tournament: Francisco Comesaña (239), winner last Sunday in the Corrientes Challenger, will face Peruvian Arklon Huertas del Pino (523) in the quarterfinals today.
