Just short of a pink jersey for Mauri Vansevenant, he cracked in the final kilometers of Etna. The German Lennard Kämna (BORA-hansgrohe) and the Spaniard Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) were at the party. Lopez because he relieves Mathieu van der Poel as leader, Kämna because he took the stage victory. Belgians Sylvain Moniquet and Mauri Vansevenant eventually became 4th and 5th.

The 4th stage in a nutshell:

  • Winners of the day: Juan Pedro Lopez and Lennard Kämna will both look back with satisfaction on their achievements. The Spaniard eventually came out on top in the fight with Mauri Vansevenant and took the pink jersey. Lopez didn’t really care that Kämna took the stage victory.
  • Loser of the Day: Mauri Vansevenant wore the virtual maglia rosa for more than 160 kilometers, but in the end the West Fleming was left empty-handed. When Juan Pedro Lopez made his attack, he just couldn’t slip along. This is a missed opportunity.
  • Remarkable: Someone has to be the first, but that it is again Miguel Angel Lopez who had to give up as the first classification man is very sour. The Colombian, one of the favorites for the podium, continues to be a sucker in the grand tours. This is the fourth time in a row that he has been forced to give up.
  • Morning: The Giro continues through Sicily. Place of arrival on duty is Messina, the birthplace of Vincenzo Nibali. The Italian veteran had to let the GC men go, but will get the chance tomorrow in his home port to reinforce his hero status even more.

Kämna gets Lopez back

For a whole day, early breakaway Mauri Vansevenant could dream of the pink jersey, but that dream eventually shattered in view of the top. The West Flemish had to take into account Juan Pedro Lopez, but when he disbanded his devils, Vansevenant had no answer.

The Trek-Segafredo Spaniard raced away from the leading group and systematically deepened his lead. Only one man saw Juan Pedro Lopez again: Lennard Kämna.

Whether the two struck a deal, we will probably never know. But they both came out with a smile. Juan Pedro Lopez was satisfied with his pink jersey, Lennard Kämna with his stage win.

In the background, Vansevenant tried to breathe new life into his pink dream. He could thank a particularly strong compatriot for this, Sylvain Moniquet surprised and was able to cling to the elite group of refugees for a long time. In the end he sprinted to a 4th place, Vansevenant was 5th.

The 4th stage of this Giro also claimed the first victims in the classification. Miguel Angel Lopez retired early in the stage with a hip injury. Tom Dumoulin, Vincenzo Nibali and Tobias Foss lost minutes and can now put away the few classification ambitions they already had.
