incidents near Geoffroy-Guichard after Saint-Etienne defeat

Smoke bombs launched from outside the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium in Saint-Etienne caused the start of the fire to be quickly brought under control, an AFP journalist noted on Saturday evening. Saint-Etienne lost to Reims 2-1 at the end of a match of the 37th and penultimate day of the French football championship played behind closed doors, approaching relegation.

A group of supporters who came outside the stadium launched projectiles reaching a television control van and causing a fire to start quickly brought under control by security, noted an AFP journalist. The police repelled about fifty individuals.

Saint-Etienne had been sanctioned with a match behind closed doors due to the indiscipline of an ultra group during the ASSE-Monaco match (1-4), on April 24, during which hundreds of pyrotechnic devices had been used.
