FIFA announces Nicolás Gallo as the only Colombian referee present

This Thursday, May 19, the Referees Commission of the FIFA announced the list of referees who were chosen to make official as judges in the next world cup Qatar 2022.

After assessing the quality of their work and the performance shown in FIFA tournaments, as well as in other national and international competitions in recent years, the entity that governs football worldwide chose, together with the six confederations: 36 central referees, 69 assistant referees and 24 members of the video referee team (VAR).

“As always, we have put quality before everything else, and the referees chosen are of the highest level in the world,” said Pierluigi Collina, chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee.

Massimo Busacca, director of the FIFA Refereeing Branch, ensures that the referees receive all the necessary support from FIFA, since their preparation is essential for the smooth running of the tournament.

The selected members will participate in various seminars in June and July (in Asunción, Madrid and Doha), in which they will review and analyze videos of real match situations, and they will be part of practical training sessions with soccer players, which will be recorded so that the participants receive immediate feedback from the instructors.

As can be seen in the list published by FIFA, only one Colombian referee will officially be in the competition: Nicholas Gallo. the tolimense will be one of those in charge of video arbitration, in which other South American judges are also found.

And it is that the VAR was implemented for the first time in Russia 2018, now, four years later, a team of 24 members of the refereeing team will be in Qatar, ready to offer their field colleagues the technological support they need.

For the first time there will be referees

The announcement highlighted the inclusion of three field referees and three other assistants, who will become the first women to participate in a men’s soccer world cup.

They are: Stéphanie Frappart (France), Salima Mukansanga (Rwanda) and Yoshimi Yamashita (Japan), along with assistants Neuza Back (Brazil), Karen Díaz Medina (Mexico) and Kathryn Nesbitt (United States).
