Dominic Thiem shares a message to fans after his sixth straight loss

Former World No. 3 Dominic Thiem has admitted an early exit from Geneva hurt him but vowed to keep working hard as he is determined to get back to his old level. Thiem returned from a wrist injury in late March and has since played six tournaments.

Thiem, who clinched his first Grand Slam title at the 2020 US Open, is having a tough comeback so far as he is 0-6. On Monday in Geneva, Thiem fell again in the first round, as Marco Cecchinato beat the Austrian 6-3, 6-4.

“It’s a work in progress. Of course, yesterday’s loss hurt me. But I won’t let that stop me. I will continue to work on myself and work towards my goals. Which I can pass on to everyone.

The process is not easy, but it will be worth taking the time to do it!” Thiem tweeted.

Thiem: I will reach my goals

“Never lose sight of your goals. Work at it until you reach it!”

I’ll do the same!” Thiem said in another tweet. Thiem was drawn against a qualifier in the first round of Geneva and that qualifier was Cecchinato. Thiem had a chance to start the match with an early break but wasted two points breaking in the third game.

Thiem paid the price for not converting his break points, as Cecchinato got the first break of the match in game six to take a 4-2 lead. Cecchinato held serve for the rest of the set to win the first set.

Thiem had a break point in the third game of the second set but saved it to go up 2-1. In game four, Thiem had five break points but he squandered them all and Cecchinato tied the set at two games.

Thiem’s failure to take five break points cost him the first break of the second set in game seven and he held serve the rest of the match to win the set.
