The announcement of the spectacular homecoming is said to be made at short notice. Until recently, Aston Villa from the Premier League was also in the running for the 46-time international.

Freiburg? It would be a change that fits!

Ginter was born there and went through the entire SC youth from 2005 to 2012. With coach Christian Streich, he won the DFB Cup twice in the U19s. Streich’s Bundesliga debut as a coach was also Ginter’s debut in the Oberhaus. His foundation for children in need is based in Freiburg.

Freiburg also fulfills his claim to play internationally again after the disaster year in Gladbach and thus to maintain his World Cup chances: The Conference League is safe, it can even become the Champions League.

Interesting: Ginter is looked after by the agency Unique Sports Group – almost half the Freiburg team (including captain Christian Günter, Lucas Höler, Yannik Keitel, Nicolas Höfler, Jonathan Schmid, Janik Haberer) is already under contract there. And Ginter has never made a secret of the fact that he will return to Breisgau “if it fits”.

Both clubs and Ginter himself have not yet confirmed the change. Ginter recently said to BILD: “It won’t be long before I say something about it.”

Financially, the SC can definitely handle the deal: Gladbach missed extending the contract with Ginter in time, so he is free of charge in the summer. At VfL he earns 3.6 million euros, in Freiburg he would immediately become a leader and top earner.

Christian Streich’s team also has an urgent need for his position: National player Nico Schlotterbeck (22) is moving to Borussia Dortmund – a fee of 25 to 30 million euros is under discussion.

His successor could be Ginter.
