Major League Baseball’s Respect Problem

The Major League Baseball lockout delayed Opening Day until April 7 of this year. I stopped attending. A long time ago in grad school, I postponed my graduation until August so my neighbor and I could take a baseball car trip. The program was almost perfect: one game in St. Louis, the next day in Kansas City, then Seattle, the Bay Area, Southern California and Dallas. Just as we were about to leave, the players went on strike. Argh! In the end, 713 games were canceled in 1981. I have never forgiven the players or their union.

I’m still a fan. Back to my New York days, I tried and failed to get opening day tickets to Shea Stadium between the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Mets. Fortunately, I got tickets for the next day. Rodney Dangerfield launched the first pitch, marketed as “No Respect Opening Day”. Just my speed.
