Gonzaga Bulldogs student 7 footer Chet Holmgren – No. 1 in the future ESPN’s Top 100 – will occur in 2022 NBA draftsoft is ESPN.
Holmgren, credited as one of the first candidates to pick first overall in the June 23 draft, brings to the NBA the unique skills of 3-point shooting, lob catching and blocking that capture the imagination of the Long inspiring league leaders.
“After a season in which we have accomplished so many great things as a team and as individuals, I feel poised to pursue my lifetime dream of playing in the NBA,” Holmgren told ESPN.
Holmgren’s arrival in the NBA draft was highly anticipated for several years as front offices closely watched his rise as a star in Minnesota high school. The chance to be number one overall has been part of the conversation around Holmgren since his days at Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis.
“I understand that basketball is a business and finding the right person and position doesn’t mean nearly as much,” Holmgren told ESPN. “At the end of the day, I’m hoping for the best for myself and my future, and if it’s number one, great.”
Holmgren, 19, averaged 14.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.7 blocks for Gonzaga. Holmgren shot 60% from the field and 39% on threes. Holmgren said he asked Gonzaga’s coaches to “train hard” during his season there and believes he’s benefited greatly from the experience working with a very talented squad and Hall of Fame coach Mark Vue.
For now, Holmgren is planning a training program to strengthen his body and skills.
“My goal is to give it my all every day to do my best,” said Holmgren. “I do it with my pre-workout – I get stronger in the weight room, I get harder [ballhandling], my photography, and I became more and more accustomed to dealing with the style of the NBA game. The Summer League will be my first opportunity to show that.
“I take great pride in doing what is required of me to try and win. At the next level, I know there will be more [floor] Space, freedom and a different style of basketball and I’m really looking forward to getting used to it and playing that style.”
