Ex-Bundesliga star Igor Belanov in action during the war – 2nd Bundesliga

He was a colorful figure in European football in the 1980s. At Eintracht Braunschweig, Igor Belanov (61) ended his career as a striker in Germany in 1994. Now the Odessa-born Ukrainian is out with a gun.

European Footballer of the Year 1986 has posted a photo taken in Odessa showing him with three compatriots in a trench. Belanov carries an assault rifle. The ex-striker recently wrote on Facebook: “I beg you to stop the bloodshed of our people immediately!”

Many cities in Ukraine have been reduced to ruins. Belanov: “Our grandfathers and fathers didn’t build them for fighting, but for happy people to live there!”

The ex-professional from Ukraine switched from Dynamo Kyiv to Borussia Mönchengladbach in 1989. During the winter break of the 1990/91 season he went to the then second division club Eintracht Braunschweig.

Belanov scored 22 goals in 69 competitive games for BTSV. In 1994 he left Braunschweig, which had since been relegated to the Oberliga. In 1988 he became Vice European Champion with the Soviet Union.
