SAN PEDRO DE MACORIS.- The teams from the Center and Correcaminos de Quisqueya dominated the opening day of the XL Superior Basketball Tournament of San Pedro de Macorís, in the matches played at the sports center of the Sports Complex.
The contest has a special dedication to the President of the Republic Luis Abinader Corona and the BanReservas Cup will be held.
The Centro club was the first to emerge victorious by beating the Mexican Warriors in the first match, 99-94, with 40 points from Romanense reinforcement Ramón Ruiz, who added 10 rebounds to complete a double-double and distributed five assists.
Ruiz was supported by Jonathan Hodge with 23 points, five rebounds and six assists, Wilson Suazo 13 and seven sacks, Jonathan de los Santos and Jean Carlos Quezada contributed nine baskets with 15 and 13 catches each.
For Mexico, the U22 reinforcement of San Cristóbal Jassel Pérez stood out with 37 points and seven rebounds, Pedro Ariel Martínez double figures of 15 points and sacks, and Ronald Mejía 14.
Columbus and Family 32 by Quisqueya
Diego Colón and José Familia combined 64 points to lead the Quisqueya Correcaminos 122-118 victory over Retiro 23, at the closing of the opening day of the Superior Basketball Tournament of San Pedro de Macorís, in the municipal roof.
Colón, a U22 reinforcement from Azua, scored 32 points with six assists, while the native Familia achieved double scoring merits with 32 baskets and 11 rebounds.
Three other players helped them: vegan reinforcement Jerry Flores scored 17 points and seven assists, Ismael García had 17 plus 14 rebounds, and Gadiel Smith finished with 13 points.
For Retiro 23, José Polanco led with 30 points, reinforcement from Hato Mayor Edward Santana scored 29 with 10 rebounds, Brandon Williams 18, North American Brett Bowling 14 and U22 Raymond Bastardo a double-double of 11 points and 10 catches.
Opening ceremony
After the celebration of the first match between Centro and Warriors, the opening protocol ceremony was held, which began with the singing of the National Anthem and then the invocation to God by Pastor Miguel Castillo.
The act was headed by Governor Aracelis Villanueva, who represented President Luis Abinader for the dedication of the tournament, accompanied by the municipal mayor Raymundo Ortiz; Rafael Uribe, president of the Dominican Basketball Federation (Fedombal); Carlos Robles, president of the Basketball Association of San Pedro de Macorís (Abasapema); Deputy Luis Gómez Benzo, who chairs the Organizing Committee.
As well as, Francisco Frías, president of the Chapter House of the Mayor’s Office of San Pedro de Macorís; the alderman Ramón Leonardo; Marcia Espinal and Eliot Durán, general secretary and treasurer, respectively, of the Organizing Committee of the XL Superior Basketball Tournament.
Former player Fausto Paulino, general manager of the BanReservas branch in the city of San Pedro de Macorís, presented the Cup sponsored by that bank and which will be awarded to the winning team.
The sports oath of the athletes was in charge of Franklin Gómez, of the Quisqueya Correcaminos.
The All-Stars of Consuelo and Titanes de Miramar teams also compete in the fair, which has former FIBA referee Amado Acosta (Radhamés) as technical director and has the endorsement of the Dominican Basketball Federation (Fedombal)
